The Upper Room scene was one of intrigue and impending danger. On one hand, there was Jesus washing the feet of the Apostles and serving the Last Supper. On the other hand, there was Judas Iscariot going out of the room to betray the Master. In the midst of the many moments occurring that night, Jesus revealed to John, the beloved disciple, the great truths of Himself as the “I am… the good Shepherd, the true Vine.” And to Peter, Jesus revealed the work of Satan and issued him a grave warning, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat,” (Lk 22:31). “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isa 40:31).
Isaiah the prophet wrote this more than a century ago before the fail of Judah to encourage the people of God when they were still living as exiles in Babylon, their enemy’s land. His words were words of comfort in the midst of God’s chastisement for their infidelity towards Him. Recently, I read a fascinating leaflet produced by The Christian Institute (UK). It presented “The Ashers Case’ that was won by the Ashers Baking Company (“ABC”). I gained better understanding of important issues from this case. I was especially encouraged by how ABC’s owner – the McArthur family – stood firm on biblical principles despite opposition.
