The term “Christian” was first used by unbelievers in Antioch on the disciples of Jesus Christ (Acts 11:25-26). Some believe that it was intended to be a derisive term. Regardless of the intent of using this term, the fact is that there is an expected distinction between one who is a Christian and one who is not. In the Gospel of John, the Apostle John wrote to both believers of Christ, and unbelievers. He was addressing people who were very skeptical about Jesus, His words and deeds. As we read the twelfth chapter of the Gospel of John, we need to consider three main events which had, or were taking place. James 3:6 says that the tongue, if used wrongly, is a fire, a world of iniquity’ (Jam 3:6). “The tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full deadly poison” (3:8). With the same tongue we bless God our Father (3:9), and with it we curse men who are made in the image of God. James says that it is not right for the same mouth to give forth blessing as well as cursing. Complaining is a Singaporean hobby. It is something we all do. We complain about the hot weather, food, bad service, the transport system, the COEs, the education system, the CPF and the Government. Modern technology is proceeding at such a rapid pace that it is presenting society with more options than we can handle. Things which were never issues before simply because they were impossible have suddenly become issues today. One danger we face is that these increased options may cause us to trespass into forbidden territory – To break God’s commandments or to usurp prerogatives that belong to God alone. When everything around us is alright, we move along with life and cater to all its demands without doubts or questions in our mind. We tend to be self-sufficient and self-reliant, and go about in our daily living, quite happy and contented. But, what happens when we receive some bad news? Philippians 3:12-14
The Apostle wrote to the Philippian believers while he was in prison. He said, “Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil 3:12-14).
